03 March, 2018
Two thousand age group triathletes flocked to Yas Island today for the annual ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi 2018. The race, now in its fourth year, saw men and women from 86 countries take part in the Sprint, Olympic and Middle distances, as well as a dedicated para-triathlete wave – a first for ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi. Thousands of spectators descended on Yas Island to support family and friends that took the plunge at one of the most exciting triathlons in the region.
Dylan Smith, who took the gold medal in the 16-19 men’s age grouper sprint distance and was ranked second overall said; “I’m pretty tired, but I managed to recover in the ice bath after the race. I really like seeing new people enter the sport and seeing their progress. There is a real community vibe here in the UAE, it’s great.”
Alison Grinnell, who crossed the line in first place for the women’s 40+ sprint distance age category commented; “I’m really pleased with my result. I wasn’t sure I was fit enough but it was a fantastic race. I’ve competed in the ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi every year. I think it’s a great course, I loved the bike section.”
