UAE volunteers called into action for ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi presented by Daman 2020

Over 500 volunteers invited to take part in hosting the largest and most inclusive triathlon in the Middle East, from 5 – 7 March 2020

With new categories added to the 3-day multi-sport festival, including an Elite Paratriathlon World Cup, this promises to be a unique experience for sports fans

The ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi presented by Daman is shouting out for an army of over 500 volunteers to come down to Yas Island from 5 – 7 March and lend a hand in running the elite and community races across the course of the 3-day multi-sport festival.

Volunteers will get to meet and assist the best-of-the-best of global triathlon racing, with an elite field of 110 elite athletes and 70 elite para athletes expended to descend on Abu Dhabi for the race including Olympic, Paralympic and World Champions. Alongside the elite races, volunteers will support the organization of the community races which welcome children and adults alike, from over 50 countries around the world. With community races for children and adults of all ages, as well as dedicated race waves for athletes of determination, the ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi is the largest and most inclusive multi-sport race in the region.

This year, with the introduction of the Elite Para Triathlon World Cup to the ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi race weekend, organizers are asking for an additional sixteen volunteers to assist para-athletes in the transition stage of their race. This consists of helping athletes of determination move from the water, to the bike, to the running track – as they chase precious Paralympic qualifying points, right here in Abu Dhabi.

Volunteers can also take on roles such as distributing water, providing participants with finishers’ packs, assisting in the media centre, and helping present medals at the end of the triathlon – just a few of the vital roles that volunteers can take on, each providing a behind-the-scenes glimpse at a key UAE sporting event.

Abu Dhabi Sports Council, owners and organizers of the ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi, noted how important this event is on Abu Dhabi’s sporting calendar.

Suhail Al Areefi, Acting director of events at ADSC said: “The ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi is an important part of a world-class calendar of sports events hosted here in Abu Dhabi, with the emirate fast becoming one of the most internationally-recognized sports destinations globally.

“Delivering these events would simply not be possible without the support of the volunteer community in the region. The ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi is a particularly exciting date on Abu Dhabi’s sports calendar, as we gear up to host the ITU Grand Final, the ‘World Championship’ of the sport, in 2022. I would urge the community to join this journey to 2022 – whether that be as a volunteer, a technical official, a participant or a spectator.”

Gary Marescia, Event Director of the ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi, added that volunteers in Abu Dhabi were critical to the success of the race weekend.

“It’s only through having an army of some of the best volunteers around that we are able to have such a great race weekend each year. Their commitment, dedication, and spirit never fail to impress me.”

“Volunteering at the ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi gives participants a unique insight into the world-class sporting action on Yas Island.” he concluded.
