Planning what to eat during a race can be overwhelming. With so many variables, it’s hard to determine what the “right” answer is for you. When deciding what to eat and drink, we think it’s helpful to break it down by looking at the nutrients your body needs. A successful nutrition plan takes into account the amount of calories your system can handle in an hour, and it should also factor in your body’s need for electrolytes, amino acids, water, and protein.

When thinking about your nutritional need for a race or training session, it’s important to remember that everyone is different and every day is different. For example, body size, air temperature, activity type, intensity, and personal preference will all GU sports nutritional products are designed to provide athletes with the necessary carbohydrate, electrolyte and amino acid requirements to fuel their endurance exercise endeavors.

Here is some starter advice from nutrition specialists at our friends at GU:

Why: GU Energy Gels provide energy from easy to digest carbohydrates, electrolytes (sodium) to support hydration, and amino acids (the building blocks of proteins) to promote muscle health. The portable and fast-acting gels are an easy way to stay fueled on-the-go during prolonged activity.

When: Before and/or during prolonged activity lasting longer than 60-90 minutes.

How: Consume one gel 15 minutes before, and an additional gel per hour for activity lasting longer than 60-90 minutes. Consume 200-400 ml fluid with each gel to ensure proper absorption.

Important: Never race with something you haven't used in training. Make sure you train with GU Energy gels.
